CABO PULMO NATIONAL PARK, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR MEXICO

Cabo Pulmo National Park is a national marine park on the east coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.

Spanning the distance between Pulmo Point and Los Frailes Cape, approximately 100 kilometres north of Cabo San Lucas in the Gulf of California.

Bahía Pulmo is home to the oldest of only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America.

Estimated to be 20,000 years old, it is the northern most coral reef in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

In 2005 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance, and is legally protected by international treaties. Sites are demarcated by UNESCO as protected zones.

In 2008 it became a Ramsar International Wetlands site. A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO, which came into force in 1975.

Cabo Pulmo has been so successful protecting the species that live here because of the commitment of the community to enforce and protect the reserve. Residents continue to enforce the park regulations, clean the beaches, and protect important animals like nesting sea turtles. Their challenge is ongoing, as tourism in the region grows and puts new pressures on the reefs and the fish populations.

If you’re flying into Los Cabos, you’ll have just a 90 minute drive to get to Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. There are several dive shops and tour operators offering trips to the park, and you’ll have 17 dive sites to choose from once you arrive. Water temperatures range from 65F to 85F, and visibility can often stretch from 60 to 100 feet. If you are not certified in diving than the snorkeling here is also incredible!
