BAHIA DE LOS SUENOS
BAY OF DREAMS, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR
“Bahia de los Suenos”
The Bay of Dreams is situated on a 6.6 mile stretch of the serene Sea of Cortez.
Life moves at a different pace here and it is so relaxing and surreal.
The GranSueno is a private gem.
It all started while travelling the Baja…drinking margaritas at a beach club in Los Barilles when I started chatting with a couple and we got to know each other a little more & they said “Hey you know what? If you want to live like a Kardashian for a few days then give this guy a call, and they gave me his contacts”. I contacted him and a couple days later, little did I know I was on my way to one of the Baja’s best kept secrets.
Travelling down a old road past cactus forests and endless palm trees I came to a guarded gate. My Spanish at the time was very little but I had explained who I was there to see & who had sent me he confirmed by radio and allowed me to enter.
Driving into the property were beautiful villas, a helicopter pad, and there was an old church and beautifully landscaped grounds and to welcome was the granite fountains at the main villa.
I had “checked in” to a completely private piece of paradise.
The room was beautiful, a king size bed with pillows upon pillows and the bathroom had beautiful mosaic detailed walls. Everything was so colorful and bright, a feeling of pure happiness.
The view from the room had a private little pool & hot tub, lounge chairs and to the white sandy beach were giant palm trees and gorgeous turquoise waters awaiting to go play in. I couldn’t believe it, just by a chance meeting this little paradise was all mine for the next few days.
Snorkeling was off the charts there were so many beautiful fish and endless coral reefs.
The drinks were wonderful, especially the Pina Coladas! They even went above and beyond to make special designs in them. Staff were incredible and completely accommodating.
Time slowed down and I am so grateful for that, it was like a dream. Really though this kind of place is nothing short of extraordinary for finding peace and serenity, this is the absolute complete opposite of the wild town of Los Cabos. A place to find yourself in complete paradise.
A little bit of history of the “Bay of Dreams” as it was not always known as that. Since the 1880s, this bay has been charted as Bahia de los Muertos, meaning “Bay of the Dead”.
The Bay was the main port for Baja Sur in the 1500s, where many a Spanish galleon docked to unload their European goods. There are still stairs and the walls from that period that were part of the docks and the open market. Early Spanish explorers named this shore the “Bay of the Dead” because a Chinese ship beached here in 1885. They were refused entry at La Paz harbor because the crew was sick with yellow fever all 18 crewmen died in the bay. Fishermen buried their bodies and marked their graves with wooden crosses, some of which still stand.
When investors starting buying up real estate and developing the land to attract buyers and visitors they changed the name to the Bay of Dreams “Bahia de los Suenos” as it would be more enticing.
The bay is a popular anchorage for yachts sailing around Baja. Facing east, the bay is well protected from north winds. Bahia de los Muertos is a fisherman’s paradise. At the north end of the bay are the ruins of a mole pier, built in the 1920’s to load iron ore on ships, from which you can look into clear water and see several fish species. Just miles outside the bay, the Sea of Cortez drops quickly to over 1,000 feet in depth. This area is called Gamefish Alley because of the many species of fish that migrate north into the gulf in spring and return south through the area in fall. Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado can be found.
This is a must stop location, even for a day of lunch at the little local beach front restaurant to check out the history and beauty.
Make sure you go early because I can guarantee you will not want to leave!
Hasta la próxima vez
“Until Next Time”….
