“Most folks agree: the forest is full of fairies and magical spaces. Mossy nooks, tiny intricate lichens and fungi, wise old trees and clear as glass pools invite the sort of imagination that runs strong and wild in children. For Coastal Captures’ Dominique Coupal, this sort of noticing is becoming a tradition.

“It all started when I was a little girl, I grew up on Vancouver Island and I would play in the forests dreaming of being a little fairy, as most little girls do. Fast forward to now being a mother - I have noticed the same attributes in my children and how imaginative they are!”

Coupal brought along her camera one day, hoping to capture some of her daughters’ forest adventures, so they would remember these special times and places. The results, especially when she sprinkled a little fairy dust in the way of special effects, were nothing less than enchanting. Soon Coupal was approached by others wanting precious moments captured, and a passion was born.

“After that, more people wanted to give the gift of magical memories to keep for their families. This is my passion. I love capturing the magic of people in beautiful destinations.”

Coupal likes to get to know her clients a little before she chooses a location. She has favorite spots, both oceanside and forest, but each shoot is unique and customized.

Photographing family groups in forests is pretty safe, even in a pandemic, but Coupal’s sense of fun and community-mindedness has inspired her to take it a step further; drive-by shootings. Her Front Porch Series is fun and quick, and all proceeds go to our local food bank. Each drive by session takes only about ten minutes, and she particularly encourages isolated elders to try it, for a little cheer and silliness.

These memories can be fun. Dress up, get creative, and we can make the best of these challenging times.”
